Credit Monitoring Services are a Rip Off!

Burglar caught in the act.

A credit report from FreeCreditReport.com is often anything but free. The fine print reveals that you are really signing up for a free 7-day credit monitoring trial.

If you find a charge on your credit card reading "CIC * TripleAdvantage," you have overstayed your welcome at FreeCreditReport.Com (or a related site like Experian.com).

Despite Federal Trade Commission orders to refund $1.25 million in "ill-gotten" gains, Experian still markets their flagship TripleAdvantage credit monitoring as a simple free credit report.

If credit monitoring is such a valuable service, why not try to sell it on its merits?

Companies pushing credit monitoring services claim they are tough protection against identity theft. The truth is credit monitoring cannot prevent identity theft; it can only alert you of fraudulent activity after it has happened. On the other hand, a security freeze is cheaper (or free) and can prevent identity theft.

There is also a deeper issue here: Your credit reports may contain errors. They may even contain evidence of fraud. But unless you pay the credit agencies to discover this damaging information, they threaten to turn it over to your business partners. Why are consumers forced to pay "protection" to keep their name clear?
